Job Description

We are seeking a Senior-Level Technical and Customer-Facing technical professional to play a key role in our company's next phase of growth. We are entering a period of strategic expansion and innovation. Boston Electronics is a highly technical matchmaker of advanced electro-optical products from Europe with academic and industrial technologists in North America. Our portfolio includes photon counting products from Becker & Hickl GmbH, Licel GmbH, and Photon Force Ltd, operating in the near UV, visible and near IR.

This Applications Engineer position will be focused on expertise and leadership of the TCSPC and FLIM product lines with growth potential. Our products relate to PHOTODETECTION and related light sources, guided by our tagline: "Detect, Measure, Control." Success in this role requires the ability to understand customer applications, recommend appropriate products based on that knowledge, or provide an honest assessment when we cannot.

Key Areas of the Position

The position encompasses developing expertise in Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC), a technique for measuring extremely low light levels and precisely timing photon detection events. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise and thought leadership for the Photon Counting product lines while working to increase sales for these products through customer engagement and travel to potential customer sites.

Technical development will include learning to determine and specify system architecture tailored to customer requirements, as well as performing initial instrument setups, troubleshooting, and tuning up existing TCSPC systems. Hands-on training in Germany is included with position onboarding to ensure comprehensive knowledge transfer. Field engagement will involve visiting customer sites approximately one week every 2 or 3 months and traveling to industry trade shows and conferences up to 4 times annually, including but not limited to SPIE Photonics West and QFLIM.

The role also includes assisting in building the North American team to provide hardware setups, troubleshooting, and optimization support. The candidate will learn this customer-facing role for Photon Counting, especially TCSPC and other applications, from the internal senior applications engineering staff and external partners/vendors. There is growth opportunity to expand this leadership role into additional technical product areas including UV, IR, and THz after mastering the Photon Counting applications.

Position Responsibilities

The Applications Engineer will translate customer application needs into practical technical solutions and system configurations for Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC) method and Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) time-resolved fluorescence techniques and related products. This requires exercising strong verbal and written communication skills for discussing technical topics, including the ability to handle questions beyond immediate expertise by knowing when to say “I will find out”.

Customer service excellence is paramount, ensuring customers feel confident and well supported through attentive communication, accurate guidance, and reliable follow-through. The position demands maintaining strong, collaborative relationships with vendors and technology partners while tracking and managing profit and loss to ensure sustainable business results.

Ongoing professional development includes staying informed about industry trends and products while maintaining and communicating with current and potential customers. The role involves prospecting and vetting industry leads, partnering with vendors and customers and learning their needs, and identifying and solving customers' equipment, process, and business needs. Additional responsibilities include identifying sales opportunities, quoting and order processing, and the constant pursuit of improved listening skills and effective communication techniques.

Location

This is a position headquartered out of New Bedford, MA. During the initial training period, work will be conducted from the Brookline, MA and New Bedford, MA offices 2-4 days per week in-person, with other days from a remote home office. Following the training period, the position will be based at the New Bedford, MA headquarters, with travel and remote home office work. Senior roles work 50%-75% remote including travel on average.
